Antiseptics are antimicrobial substances applied topically to control or prevent infection, sepsis, or putrefaction. These are used for cleansing of skin and wound surfaces after injury, preparation of skin surfaces prior to injections or surgical procedures, and routine disinfection of the oral cavity as part of a program of oral hygiene. Antiseptics are among the routinely used solutions to prevent infection or contamination from infectious diseases in animals.

The veterinary antiseptics market in Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Rest of the World, by product, has been analyzed and estimated for the following products: iodine and iodophors, chlorhexidine, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, and others (silver compounds and acetic acid). Iodine and iodophors are among the widely used antiseptics in veterinary care. Additionally, iodophors act as a carrier for iodine providing sustained and prolonged release of antiseptics. Iodine and iodophors as a compound has efficacy against bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Moreover, iodine and iodophors are used for uterine irrigation.

Chlorhexidine is widely known for its antiseptic activity in oral care. It is relatively non-irritating to tissues and is used as a bactericidal, virucidal, and fungicidal. Chlorhexidine has limited activity against fungi and mycobacterium. Chlorhexidine as an antiseptic is widely used among horses, cats, sheep, cows, poultry animals, and dogs for the treatment of superficial cuts, abrasions, and insect stings. The potential disadvantages of chlorhexidine include staining of pellicle, unpleasant taste, and desensitized taste buds. Therefore, it is the second leading product in emerging and developing markets. Hydrogen peroxide is a harsh antiseptic agent and can damage the healthy tissues around the wound or abrasion. Despite this characteristic, hydrogen peroxide is an excellent germicidal agent majorly used to remove pus and debris from the wound. Apart from the direct application of hydrogen peroxide on animals, it is used to clean cages, fish ponds, and animal fur. In dogs, hydrogen peroxide is used to induce vomiting in case of toxic ingestion apart from the prevention of septic.

Alcohol is primarily used before immunization or vaccination, especially in small animals such as cats, dogs, and sheep. Compared to other antiseptics, alcohol exhibits more irritation on tissues and denatured protein. This could promote bacterial growth in open wounds. Isopropyl alcohol also serves as a rubefacient in freeze branding, and as an invigorating body wash for temporary relief for minor muscular aches or pain due to overexertion and fatigue. Low action or contact time due to early vaporization is considered to be the major drawback of alcohol based antiseptics. Low action leads to rapid bacterial regrowth. Silver compounds are used as mild antiseptics and in ophthalmic preparations. Silver nitrate commonly employed as a caustic antiseptic and an astringent is mostly used in cats and dogs. The degree of action for silver nitrate depends upon the concentration used and the duration for which the compound is allowed to act. Acetic acid is majorly used as wound dressing and in urinary tract irrigation.
