Brekford Expands Into Eastern Shore of Maryland With School Zone Enforcement Contract
The Town of Princess Anne Targets Child Safety With Speed Monitoring Camera Systems

Brekford’s speed cameras, also known as photographic speed-monitoring systems, will be installed in school zones within the town limits and will operate Monday through Friday between the hours of 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. The systems use special equipment to automatically measure the speed of vehicles and produce photos of the license plates of those exceeding a pre-determined speed. Upon police review and confirmation of violations, citations are mailed to the owners of the vehicles. A study conducted by the Cochrane Collaboration for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (“IHHS”) has revealed that this type of speed enforcement technology has been effective in reducing injurious and fatal auto-pedestrian accidents in school zones by as much as 58 percent.
“The safety of children should never be at risk from dangerous drivers when they are on their way to or from school, and a growing number of states have passed legislation authorizing the use of automated speed enforcement systems to reduce the amount of speeding and reckless driving in school zones,” said C. The terms of the Princess Anne contract provide for the installation of up to five (5) camera systems for a period of two (2) years, with the town having the option to renew the contract up to four (4) more times for a period of one (1) year each. In accordance with Maryland law, the Princess Anne Police Department will issue warning tickets to vehicles exceeding posted speed limits for an initial period of 30 days. After this initial 30-day period, the owners of vehicles captured driving at least 12 miles over the speed limit will be issued a $40 citation. Failure to remit payment in a timely manner can result in additional penalties, including the inability of vehicle owners to renew their vehicle registrations if they have outstanding citations under the automated speed camera program.
