VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Jan. 18, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Twenty-six Grade 7 students from Britannia Elementary School are finding creative ways to be leaders and speak their minds this week. Their culminating Showcase will take place in the Auditorium at Britannia Secondary School on Friday, January 19th at 5:30 p.m. The media are invited.

Their inspiration is ‘Remembrance’, a play by Lori Sherritt-Fleming. Set during WW1, it brings students back over 100 years to a time and place that helped to forge Canada’s identity. Through the voices of its characters, viewers come to understand the motivation behind the sacrifices made, the fears faced, the obstacles overcome and the hopes left behind for future generations in the early days of the 20th century. The play weaves history, historical documents and controversy into a story that highlights the power of the human spirit, both then and now. It illustrates how hope, in its many forms, can be a powerful tool in overcoming adversity, leaving the viewer with a richer understanding of Canada’s culture of freedom and how it was born. It dares viewers to ponder what their own messages of hope are and what they can do to make the world a better place.

In this week-long program by DAREarts, running from Monday, January 15, to Friday, January 19th the young teens are exploring their own real life challenges and triumphs, inspired by the content of “Remembrance” as they engage in visual arts, writing, music, drama, videography and media arts.

“Through these artistic mediums, the children explore ways that the DARE values of Discipline, Action, Responsibility and Excellence can guide them through challenging times to become leaders,” says Shelley MacDonald, DAREarts Vancouver Lead Teacher. “The children create artwork and performance pieces that speak for them of these life values.”

DAREarts (Canadian Charitable No. 88691 7764 RR0002) provides unique, values-based arts programs for 9-19 year olds across Canada, including Indigenous communities. The children explore their identity while they paint, sculpt, sing, dance, compose, design, write, act and create, guided by arts professionals. They build their confidence and courage to be leaders who ignite change.  In its 21st year, DAREarts has influenced more than 200,000 children!
