BRUNSWICK, Maine, Jan. 12, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — To honor the spirit of giving, The Veterinary Clinic of Brunswick, Maine, has raised 850 pounds of pet food to assist local families in feeding their furry friends. The vet clinic began their drive on December 1st and wrapped up on December 21st, working with the Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

“Preventing hunger in people is critical, of course, but we often forget that pets need to eat too,” says Dr. Matthew Horgan, owner of The Brunswick Veterinary Clinic and a member of its team since 1988 when he first moved to Brunswick. “Many of us think nothing about heading to the local pet store or vet and buying as much dog or cat food as we need. Families on a tight budget, however, can’t do that so easily. We want to help them out, and working with MCHPP is an excellent way to do that.”

The Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program started in a church basement in 1983 and has since grown to nine different programs, many of which have satellite locations throughout the mid-coast region. From their very beginnings serving a meal to three local residents in need, they now help thousands of families.

The clinic, which also includes Dr. Erica Parthum, Dr. Amy Wood, and Dr. Kevin Cowan, as well as a large and friendly staff, is proud to have been a part of this effort. Through reaching out to the community and running the drive right inside their clinic, they were able to amass enough food to supply hundreds of families with assistance for their animals.

The Veterinary Clinic in general, and Dr. Horgan specifically, were also voted Best Veterinarian in the Midcoast Maine veterinarian survey for 2017. The survey takes into account votes from real people who frequent the businesses nominated, so the awards speak for the actual population served by the clinic. A big part of this is due to the clinic’s ongoing support of the community and its pets.

Families who have too few funds to support themselves often have to let their pets go without in the interest of paying bills and feeding children, and the clinic has expressed an interest in helping to remedy this on an ongoing basis. “Pets are a big part of the family,” says Dr. Horgan. “We recognize that, and hope to make a difference now and in the future.”

The Brunswick Vet Clinic offers routine veterinary care, emergency care and surgery, exotic pet services and geriatrics. The clinic has been serving the Brunswick area for more than three decades, offers a variety of payment options and aims to serve the community as best as they possibly can, they can be reached by calling the phone number.
