Goodenough. 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award Winner: Dr. John B. Goodenough
The prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes an individual who is devoted to the advanced design and manufacturing industry and provided significant personal contributions to the field. This year’s Lifetime Achievement winner, Dr. John Goodenough, was selected for his pioneering contributions to the wireless device industry through the invention of the rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Today, Dr. Goodenough’s batteries are used worldwide for mobile phones, laptops, tablets, electric vehicles, and other wireless devices. Dr. Goodenough obtained a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Yale University and both a Master’s degree and PhD in physics from the University of Chicago. Dr. Goodenough made his groundbreaking lithium-ion battery discovery during his time as the head of inorganic chemistry at the University of Oxford. His discovery can now be found in every portable electronic device and electric vehicle.
