VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., April 26, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Crush Cancer, benefiting Cycle for Survival, the movement to beat rare cancers, will host its third annual indoor cycling event Sunday, May 7th from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Onelife Fitness on Virginia Beach Blvd. 100 percent of every dollar raised through the participants will go toward rare cancer research and clinical trials led by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the nation’s No. 1 cancer care hospital.

In 10 years of rides, the national organization has raised over $140 million for rare cancer research. Discoveries made have helped thousands of patients; from computers that can more accurately predict patient survival rate to radiation techniques that destroy cancer in the body while protecting vital organs. Locally, the Crush Cancer chapter is leading the way with innovative fundraising techniques.

As the top performing satellite branch across the nation, the Virginia Beach chapter is the first to organize a Kids Crush Cancer team, allowing younger activists the opportunity to participate in this one-of-a-kind event. Thus far, there are 29 registered for the kid’s team, and over 200 for the adult teams, collectively raising nearly $160,000 in support of the effort.

Crush Cancer Co-Founders Rosemary Wilson and Tony Nero, who lost their spouses due to rare cancers, encourage people across Hampton Roads to join the battle. “Nearly 50% of people with cancer are battling a rare form of cancer,” stated Wilson. “Unfortunately, research remains drastically underfunded, often leaving rare cancer patients with limited or no treatment options.” Nero added, “our fundraising efforts through the annual Crush Cancer event will lead to better, more innovative treatments for patients, and make groundbreaking discoveries possible.”

The high-energy indoor cycling event is made possible by the generous support of Hampton Roads residents as well as company sponsors, such as TowneBank, WAVY TV 10, Onelife Fitness, Reed & Associates Marketing, Charles Barker Automotive, The Main, Sentara, McLeskey, The ESG Companies, Gold Key|PHR, Bon Secours, Armada Hoffler Properties, Harvey Lindsay Commercial Real Estate, Yuzhu Zheng, Southeast Virginia Community Foundation, I264 Web Design & Photography, Virginia Oncology Associates and Qdoba. Green Flash Brewery will host an exciting after party, from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm, for participants and their families to commemorate the experience.
