Applications of 2-ethylhexanoic acid (2-EHA) are as a drying agent, plastic stabilizer, emollifying agent, and wood prevention. 2-EHA is mixed with cadmium, strontium, or tin to manufacture plastic. It is especially renowned for its use in PVC (polyvinyl chloride). Adding 2-EHA salts to PVC raise its tolerance for resistance.

It is used as a skin moisturizer or in hair conditioners. 2-EHA is also a wood preservative, as it combines with fungicides to protect cut wood. Other applications include fragrances and corrosion inhibitors.
