WAUCHULA, Fla., Nov. 01, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Sevigny & Associates Eye Care will be holding a macular degeneration education seminar on Friday, November 20th at the Sebring office located at 363 U.S. Highway 27 South. This seminar will help attendees learn how to prevent macular degeneration and fight blindness through education and awareness. Those interested in attending should call Sevigny & Associates Eye Care at 863-773-3322 to RSVP. The seminar goes from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. All attendees will receive a free lunch along with an Amsler grid. For those who want to do all they can to save their sight, they should not miss this seminar hosted by Dr. Mark Sevigny.

According to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation (AMDF), this incurable eye disease affects more than 10 million Americans and is the leading cause of vision loss. Macular degeneration is caused when the middle part of the retina, called the macula, begins to deteriorate. The macula helps to bring things into focus in the central part of the eye and helps with reading, recognizing faces, and seeing the finer details of different objects.

The causes of age-related macular degeneration are not well-known. The biggest risk factor in getting this eye disease is simply age. There are other risk factors, however, including genetics and race. Smoking can double the chances of getting macular degeneration. Some healthcare professionals recommend eating plenty of dark, green, leafy vegetables and also fish, fruit and nuts, which have been proven to help prevent the disease.

Those who are proactive in taking good care of their eyes, including wearing sunglasses while outdoors and having regular eye exams, can also lower the risk of getting macular degeneration. “During the seminar, we will be focusing on education and being aware of the symptoms of macular degeneration. Knowledge and understanding of the disease are key components when it comes to early detection and treatment,” says Dr. Mark Sevigny.

Some of those symptoms and early signs of detection can include: straight lines appearing distorted, blurry areas in the center of vision, and a change in the perception of color. During the education seminar, Dr. Sevigny will discuss other symptoms along with ways to become aware of and fight macular degeneration and blindness. He will also talk about the Amsler grid and teach attendees how to test themselves at home. “Early detection can be very beneficial when it comes to lessening the risk of vision loss,” says Dr. Sevigny.
