MORGAN HILL, Calif., Oct. 27, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Wi-SUN Alliance, a global ecosystem of companies seeking to accelerate the implementation of Field Area Networking and the Internet of Things (IoT),  today announced a successful test event of the new European frequency band (870-876MHz) suitable for use in the Wi-SUN Field Area Network (FAN) specification. The event, held 21- 22 October at UL in Basingstoke, United Kingdom, represents a key step towards completing a certification program to ensure multi-vendor interoperability for products supporting improved data rates, performance, robustness and security for Smart City and IoT deployments across Europe.

Participants at the event, including promoter members Renesas, ROHM and Silver Spring Networks, demonstrated multi-vendor interoperability using currently available products operating in the European frequency band. The next interoperability event will finalize the certification test specifications and enable the launch of the certification program.

“This event reinforces Wi-SUN Alliance as the leading multi-vendor, interoperable foundation for enhanced Smart City and IoT deployments across Europe,” said Phil Beecher, chairman, Wi-SUN Alliance. “With proven Wi-SUN support for both the established and new European frequency bands, we are close to launching the certification program that will ensure multi-vendor interoperability across even more products.”

The adoption of Wi-SUN FAN enables wireless connectivity in a wide range of IoT applications including smart utility networks, such as advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), distribution automation (DA), and smart cities (e.g. street lighting and other urban infrastructure) across all regions that are addressed by the IEEE 802.15.4g global standard.  The Wi-SUN specification helps enterprises, service providers and municipalities by enabling interoperable, multi-service and secure IPv6/6LoWPAN communications over an IEEE 802.15.4g based wireless mesh network.  Mesh-enabled FANs provide resilient, secure and cost effective connectivity with extremely good coverage in a range of topographical environments, from dense urban neighborhoods to rural areas, with minimal additional infrastructure.

*The Wi-SUN Alliance will be exhibiting and available for press meetings at European Utility Week, 3-5 November 2015, Vienna, Austria, please visit us at stand m59.
