In 1966 while in his early 20s, Mr. Hathaway founded Dartmouth Investments Limited in his native United Kingdom, building a group of engineering businesses into a public corporation acquired by Harsco in 1979. Joining Harsco’s world headquarters in 1984, he became involved in the wider management of the Company, serving first as Senior Vice President – Operations of the Engineered Products Group. In 1991, he was named President and Chief Operating Officer and elected to the Board of Directors, and in that same year, he also became a U.S. Citizen. In 1994, he was elected Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer of the Company. Under his leadership, Harsco significantly expanded its role as a market-leading provider of multi-industry industrial services on an international scale, growing operations to more than 45 countries worldwide. He retired from the Company at the end of 2007 and from the Board of Directors in early 2008.

Harsco President and CEO Nicholas Grasberger commented, “Derek Hathaway’s contributions to Harsco and to society speak to an extraordinary man who fully dedicated his immense talents, energy and wisdom to the greater good. His towering influence to every organization with which he was associated, every individual who heard him speak, and every aspiring business manager who drew encouragement from his leadership and values are the foundations of a legacy that will stand for many generations to come.”

Mr. Grasberger continued, “His biography would be incomplete by not also acknowledging the lifelong support and devotion of Mr. Hathaway’s wife of 50 years, Margaret Hathaway, and the role that she and other spouses and families play in the success of their partners as Harsco employees.”

The Company has posted a special memorial page on its website at www.harsco.com.

Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
