CHICAGO, Sept. 17, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The John Marshall Law School in Chicago has appointed Professor Arthur Acevedo to oversee the school’s master of jurisprudence (M.J.) graduate degree program. The M.J. degree provides non-lawyers with an understanding of the law, with the option of focusing on several legal specialties.
“With our M.J. program we are focused on building relationships with businesses and organizations to develop programming catered to address unique legal issues,” Dean John E. Corkery said. “With his knowledge and experience, Arthur is the best suited to lead the law school’s efforts in securing such business partnerships.”
Acevedo joined the John Marshall faculty in 2007. He teaches Income Tax, Corporations and contract law. He came to John Marshall from the University of Baltimore School of Law, where he taught contracts and business associations. He previously also taught international taxation and corporate reorganizations as an adjunct professor at DePaul University.
Prior to teaching, Acevedo worked for McDonald’s Corporation as a tax attorney structuring tax efficient transactions, and later as an international attorney planning cross-border transactions. He left McDonald’s Corporation to join Marbo Inc., a private-equity portfolio company specializing in the beverage industry, as its executive vice president-general counsel managing all phases of its global transaction and litigation practice. His prior work experience includes working as tax counsel for Price Waterhouse, and as a revenue agent with the Internal Revenue Service.

The M.J program exposes students to a variety of legal principles thereby giving them a competitive advantage in the marketplace,” Acevedo said. “I plan to use my experience in the corporate world to help foster business relationships that will be beneficial to our students as well as those businesses.”
Acevedo received his undergraduate degree with a double major in accounting and finance from DePaul University. Afterwards, Acevedo successfully sat and passed the CPA exam. He then went on to complete his education receiving both his Master of Science in Taxation, and his Juris Doctor degree from DePaul University. He is fluent in Spanish and proficient in Portuguese.
The John Marshall M.J. is designed to help people navigate industries and markets that have been increasingly complex and regulated. Depending on the subject matter, the M.J. may be pursued either full or part time, and many courses are found online. An M.J. in Estate Planning may be pursued fully online. Most specialty areas require M.J. candidates have completed at least five years of work experience. Candidates must complete 24 credit hours to earn their degree.
