ROCHESTER, N.Y., Sept. 15, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Following a successful trial study by the Australian Defense Force, BlackBox Biometrics’ Blast Gauge® System has been recommended for further use, “including collaboration with allied nations to plan future research.” The study, which was published in the latest issue of the Journal of Military and Veterans’ Health, involved fielding over 4,000 Blast Gauges to deployed Australian troops in Afghanistan.
The Blast Gauge System records a Servicemember’s exposure to blast overpressure and acceleration forces capturing critical data to aid the triage and treatment of blast-related injuries such as traumatic brain injury. The system also enables advanced research into the mechanisms of these injuries and safe exposure levels. With the push of a button, the gauge emits a discreet visual cue, alerting unit medics and leadership when further evaluation is required. A micro-USB connection allows for detailed data to be downloaded and analyzed by medical personnel. An Australian Patent for the Blast Gauge technology was registered in June 2015.
The study was named Project CEREBRO to provide a monitoring capability of individual exposure to blast overpressure resulting from an improvised explosive device or other explosive blasts. The Blast Gauges were used to collect exposure data and aid commanders in the prioritization of medical assessments. While changes in force operations during the September 2012 – December 2013 study resulted in greater use of the Blast Gauge System during training than deployment, the gauges captured approximately 1,474 events resulting from blast exposure. Overall, soldier acceptance of the technology was good, and the report recommended continued use of the Blast Gauge System on all deployed troops, in addition to further exploring use in training.
