WASHINGTON, Sept. 3, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) commends the Los Angeles City Council for approving the airport commission’s plan to allow mobile app-based transportation network companies (TNCs), such as Uber and Lyft, to begin servicing passengers from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Until now, passengers could use TNCs for airport departures, but only transportation companies with special permits could legally service arrivals.

The USHCC advocated strongly on behalf of its partner, Uber, making the case that TNCs have increasingly become a source of income for many entrepreneurial individuals, including many Hispanics, as a legitimate form of self-employment that stimulates city-wide economic activity in the process.

“The USHCC has long supported the use of cutting-edge technology for the benefit of entrepreneurs and consumers alike, and the popular demand for app-based services further validates Uber’s business model. We believe consumer education and awareness, rather than stifling government regulation, should guide the market,” said USHCC President & CEO Javier Palomarez. “The USHCC is proud to have advocated on behalf of Uber – an innovative company that has transformed the transportation industry — on this important issue. We will continue to support Uber, and all companies that help create jobs, fuel innovation, and represent the realities of our consumer-driven technology.”

Los Angeles has become the largest city in the nation to allow TNC services to inbound and outbound airport passengers. LAX is the busiest airport on the West Coast and the second busiest airport in the country. Over 70 million passengers passed through LAX in 2014, and the number of passengers is projected to grow to 100 million per year in the next decade.
