ATLANTA, Sept. 2, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — UPS® (NYSE:UPS) today announced that ORION (On-Road Integrated Optimization and Navigation), has been named a 2015 Computerworld Data+ Editors’ Choice Award honoree. This prestigious honor recognizes the country’s most elite companies that are successfully leveraging big data initiatives to deliver significant business value.
Each business day, the number of route combinations a UPS driver can make is extremely large and requires a complex mathematical problem to find the optimal path to follow. Using package-level detail and customized online map data, ORION technology includes proprietary routing software that helps drivers select the most efficient delivery route each day, reducing miles, costs, fuel use and related vehicle emissions, while meeting customer requirements for time-sensitive pickup or deliveries.
The project was originally slated for complete U.S. implementation by 2017; but because of the overwhelming success of the initial rollout, UPS recently fast-tracked the U.S. timeline. UPS aims to deploy ORION to 70 percent of its routes by the end of 2015 and across the entire U.S. network by the end of 2016.
Once fully implemented, ORION is expected to reduce by 100 million miles annually the distance driven by its drivers, with additional benefits including an annual savings of 10 million gallons of fuel and more than $300 million.
“The development and subsequent rollout of ORION was, and continues to be, a team effort,” said UPS Chief Information Officer Dave Barnes. “Supported by our innovative package-flow technologies, this ambitious software engineering effort fully leverages our global deployment and logistics expertise, including IT, analytics and the operations research division. Without the critical contributions of these UPS teams, ORION would not have been possible.”
The 2015 Data+ Editors’ Choice Awards honorees and their achievements will appear in a special September feature on Computerworld.com.
About Computerworld’s Data+ Editor’s Choice Awards
The Computerworld Data+ Editors’ Choice awards program was launched in 2013 by IDG’s Computerworld editorial team to recognize organizations that are mining big data to analyze and predict business trends and monetize this information. Organizations were asked to complete questionnaires detailing their big data projects, which were then reviewed by the Computerworld editorial team. From those questionnaires, honorees were selected for their ability to achieve business benefits through big data, and demonstrate real-world results and best practices.
