AUSTIN, Texas, Oct. 19, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Xplore Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ:XPLR) today announced that Mexico’s top rail operator Ferrovalle is continuing to expand its use of Xplore F5m and R12 rugged tablet PCs as part of a growing project that started in 2010.

Hundreds of the Xplore tablets are now being utilized by intermodal yard technicians, train operators, and crane operators as part of a sophisticated “zero distance” mobile computing solution that reaches across Ferrovalle’s terminal, intermodal facility and locomotives on all routes. In fact, Xplore rugged tablets are the only mobile PCs on the market capable of interfacing with Ferrovalle’s new and existing back-office systems and software to deliver consistent, real-time data access in all of the company’s operating environments. “The Xplore rugged tablet has proven to be the ideal platform for our development and execution of smart logistics systems under a “zero distance” philosophy.” Rubén Castillo Santistebe, Ferrovalle

As Mark Holleran, president and COO of Xplore, noted: “Ferrovalle receives and delivers an average of 20,000 trains and more than 1,000,000 railcars per year. They also run Mexico’s largest intermodal facility for all three of the country’s line-haul carriers. They have no room for error in their highly complex, around-the-clock logistical operations. That’s why they initially chose Xplore rugged tablets to serve as the foundation of their smart logistics system six years ago and why they continue to rely exclusively on Xplore rugged tablets today.”

Both the F5m and R12 rugged tablet platforms have consistently exceeded Ferrovalle’s industry-leading safety, transparency, connectivity, and software performance standards as workflow utilization has expanded and data demands have increased. The Xplore tablet PCs have also proven to be the only mobile computing platforms flexible and powerful enough to facilitate the ongoing development of custom business applications built by Ferrovalle’s in-house IT team. The backwards-compatible and future-ready Xplore PC platforms are able to interface with other smart devices, geolocation applications, and the Internet of Things, allowing for fast workflow expansion. As a result, Ferrovalle has been able to flawlessly execute its “zero distance, black box-to-glass box” smart logistics initiative, as recognized though multiple awards from InformationWeek México, GE, and PC World México.

“When this project started, Ferrovalle’s first priority was to find a PC platform with the rugged suitability for both the open-air and in-cab environments in which the devices would ultimately be utilized,” Holleran continued. “However, Ferrovalle’s IT team has been pushing the technology envelope and driving incremental innovation efforts for nearly two decades. So they also required a highly flexible tablet platform that could adapt to both their rapidly growing and rapidly evolving tech-driven business environment. Xplore tablets were the only mobile PCs that met all criteria without compromise.”

The Wi-Fi-enabled F5m platform was first selected by Ferrovalle after an exhaustive analysis in 2010 and initially utilized by crane operators to track containers in real time. By the first year’s end, each of Ferrovalle’s 31 locomotive cabs was also equipped with Xplore rugged tablets. Shortly thereafter, Ferrovalle began rapidly deploying hundreds more Xplore rugged tablets, eventually adding Xplore’s larger R12 rugged tablet PC into operations to support specialized computing requirements. Today, the tablets are being used for everything from container tracking to damage inspection, and delivery and shipping operations to work order completion.

The Intel®-powered F5m and R12 tablet PCs deliver a highly secure, professional-grade Windows® solution that is built to last, with external protection against vibration, water, dust, drops and extreme temperatures and internal longevity components such as Solid State Drives (SSD), expandable storage and memory, and enterprise-level security. Both Xplore tablets also offer bright sunlight-readable screens, touch and pen inputs, and the secure mobile docking systems Ferrovalle needs in locomotive and rail yard forklift cabs.

“Ferrovalle’s innovative technology initiatives have long set the standard in the global transportation sector, and we’re proud that Xplore rugged tablets were the reason that they have been able to expand and sustain these internationally-applauded efforts for the last six years. We have repeatedly set a mobile computing standard of our own for the last 20 years, and we know that our continued collaboration with Ferrovalle will enable us both to extend our track-record of industry-leading innovation.”
