CHICAGO, April 27, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Strack & Van Til has partnered with making change® in a point-of-purchase campaign in 12 of its stores in the greater Chicago area to benefit Building Homes for Heroes® – which brings mortgage free housing to injured veterans nationwide.

As part of the month-long initiative, making change will coordinate the point-of-purchase Building Homes for Heroes campaign at participating Strack & Van Til and Ultra Foods stores in the Chicagoland area May 1-31. The campaign will feature colorful boards and $1, $3 and $5 donation coupons stationed at registers. Customers can support the campaign by handing a donation coupon in the desired denomination to a sales associate, and that donation amount appears on the final grocery bill. Donations are 100 percent tax-deductible.

“We are extremely proud of the sacrifices our military veterans have made to keep freedom alive across the world, and this initiative is our way of giving back and saying ‘thank you’ for a job well done,” said Ken Diehl, president, Strack & Van Til/Ultra Foods and Town and Country. “We are honored to partner with making change and Building Homes for Heroes to welcome these veterans home.”

The campaign will raise funds to help build one of six homes in the Chicago area, customized to fit the specific needs of an injured veteran and his or her family.

“We are excited to join with the Strack & Van Til team to help Building Homes for Heroes, an amazing organization dedicated to making a real difference for those who have served our country,” said Dave McConnell, president and CEO of making change. “Through this campaign, we will raise the critical funding to help build a home and meet the needs of a very deserving Chicago hero and their family.”

Building Homes for Heroes is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to making a difference in the lives of wounded American service members and their families. Since 2006, the organization has gifted more than 80 mortgage-free homes to wounded veterans across the U.S. The organization is on track to gift one home every 10 days, for a total of 36 this year.

Chicago is home to nearly 424,000 veterans, and there are more than 802,000 veterans across Illinois. There are 23 million veterans in the U.S., according to the Department of Veterans Affairs.

“We’re honored to have Strack & Van Till, Ultra Foods and making change’s support in this important campaign in grocery stores throughout Chicago,” Building Homes for Heroes president Andy Pujol said. “Their support enables us to make a meaningful and memorable difference in the lives of our injured servicemen and women.”
